Our first impression of this large Moraga Mediterranean home, nestled in a gorgeous wooded and hilly setting, was that it had great bones, but was quite outdated. The primary bathroom had an old-fashioned curved glass block shower, an old-fashioned raised jetted tub, a square white tile floor with large white grout lines, and an old beat-up vanity. The obscure windows let in light but none of the beauty of the homeowner’s private and park-like setting.
We created a bright, serene primary bathroom, with large windows overlooking trees and hills, a large freestanding tub with a view, and a spacious shower. The double vanity, a frameless custom cabinet of beautiful faux wood melamine with a horizontal grain had clean lines and was a lovely grey color. The clients chose a custom integrated sink and countertop from MTI, a Crosswater Formosa Petite tub, and a Toto toilet. We went with clear windows, as the property was completely private, so natural light and beautiful views were a focal point.
The tile in the shower was 12″x24″ large format porcelain tile on the walls and bathroom floor, while the shower pan was 2″x2″ porcelain tile (for grippage). We built a curbless shower, with hinged glass doors and side panels. Matte black plumbing fixtures and cabinetry hardware created a distinctive look, as did the simple wall sconces with black accents. Our clients chose a large mirror on the wall above the vanity instead of medicine cabinets, as the vanity provided lots of storage. With white-painted walls and an off-white tile floor, the room was beautifully calm and truly became their refuge after a long day.
