This Mediterranean home in the Orinda Hills was bright and spacious but needed reimagining to suit a family of four. The original upstairs kitchen felt dated, while the great room below offered soaring ceilings, abundant light, and French doors to the yard—an ideal spot for the new kitchen.
We relocated the kitchen to the great room, transforming the old kitchen space into two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a laundry room.
The great room’s existing rich Brazilian cherry floors with maple inlay borders inspired the design. We created a niche in the interior two-story shear wall for the refrigerator, range top, hood, and countertops, stealing space from the large bedroom behind it, while preserving the integrity of the existing floors. Because this space would serve as the main gathering area, we minimized the appearance of appliances. The Wolf microwave drawer is tucked behind the L-shaped island, out of view from the living area. The Sub-Zero refrigerator and Miele dishwasher are paneled, and a custom countertop cabinet conceals small appliances such as the air fryer.
The cabinetry features a two-tone palette: white-painted perimeter cabinets and rift-cut white oak vertical-grain cabinets in a soft Sesame Matte finish on the island. The combination complements the dark cherry floors and creates a California modern feel that blends seamlessly with the arched openings and French doors.
Vadara quartz countertops with a subtle pattern add a light, elegant touch. The vaulted wood ceiling ties the space together, while warm white walls enhance the natural light. Around the corner, a spacious, shelved pantry provides ample storage. The result is a welcoming kitchen and living space designed for family gatherings and effortless entertaining.
